He’s shorter than Touya, but broader around the shoulders, so he’s not exactly sure… The red goes well with the warmth of his skin.

He thinks it might actually look nice on Keigo’s skin tone. He sees one that’s a nice, vibrant shade of red, with red feather detail. Maybe that should be her Christmas gift this year… He immediately is assaulted by holiday music and the smell of some obnoxious perfume he thinks his mother would like. He’s still in his work clothes - a casual button down and khakis that he hates - when he walks inside the store. They probably have something suitable for Keigo. Two days later, after his shift at the call center, Touya goes to the department store Jacy’s. He spends the next half hour listening to Keigo talk about necklaces and rings. “Can’t help it, I got a college education and everything.” “And crap? Well, we don’t keep any of that in stock.” Keigo says. Fuyumi isn’t a piercings type of person, though. “So do you.” Keigo says, “All the piercings, I mean. I was looking for a gift for…” don’t say he’s your secret santa victim, he tells himself. “Uh,” Keigo laughs, “Place of employment…?” “Got something important you’re saving for?” “4, actually, DoorDash technically doesn’t count since it’s on my own time.” Keigo says. “I work here?” Keigo points to his nametag. He wears a golden nametag on his chest, with his name embossed in ruby red gemstones. He whirls around and glares at Keigo Takami, who’s grinning at him with a thousand-watt smile, dressed in a nice button down, a red tie, and black dress pants. He physically flinches so hard he almost collapses on the ground. There’s a cap of twenty five dollars for the secret santa, so that no one buys someone an iPod or something. When he looks at the price tags he thinks: ah. He enters the jewelry store, because he remembers seeing the red earrings on Keigo’s ears, and thinks this is a good place to start. He doesn’t sing along, although he could. Touya knows all the words because his sister plays them non-stop around this time of year while she decorates.

The mall is full of holiday shoppers and it’s annoying. Ever since turkey day, as Touya refers to it, the weather has only gotten worse. Touya has his scarf pulled all the way up to cover his nose. Snow falls around the mall in white tufts.

What he hadn’t expected was getting roped into a secret santa, and getting Keigo on as his person on top of it. It gave him an excuse to not spend the night at his parents house, without hurting his mother’s feelings and making her think it’s personal. I’ll go to the shitty company party on Christmas Eve this year,” when Himiko asked him. They’re all still recovering from it and trying to get to some “new” normal. It isn’t easy to move past the damage done to the Todoroki family. He does have his family this year, he supposes, but it’s complicated between them now. It’s a holiday about family and love and giving, three things that he doesn’t really have in his life. Touya has never been a big Christmas person, personally. These are the only indicators of the upcoming holiday season. A plastic menorah rests underneath the window. Their office has limited holiday decor – glittering tinsel is draped across the cubicle dividers and a fuzzy santa hat is draped precariously over the coffee maker. Keigo pouts, like he wishes Touya told him the name he got, when that’s against the rules of a secret santa in the first place. Maybe Touya can find some cheap earrings or something. He sticks out like a sore thumb against the bleak call center cubicles, a blob of color in a world of beige. He’s in an ugly buffalo plaid sweater and has red wing earrings in his ears. “Get someone good?” Keigo asks him, making eye contact from across the room. Is it even fair for him to participate in the secret santa? This time his brows are furrowed, and his scowl is on full display. Touya stares at the name on his scrap of paper.
